Job Description

The Construction Safety Officer (CHSO) ensures the implementation and maintenance of health and safety standards across construction sites within the Cape Winelands District. This role involves the continuous monitoring of workplace conditions, risk assessments, and the promotion of a culture of safety among all personnel. The officer ensures compliance with relevant legislation, codes of practise, and company policies to prevent accidents and occupational illnesses. The position is contract based which lasts 6 months. 

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct regular safety inspections and audits on construction sites to identify potential hazards and ensure compliance with health and safety regulations.
  • Develop, implement and review site-specific health and safety plans and procedures.
  • Carry out risk assessments and recommend appropriate control measures to mitigate identified risks.
  • Lead accident investigations, report findings, and implement corrective actions to prevent recurrence.
  • Provide training and guidance to site staff on health and safety best practises and legal requirements.
  • Ensure the proper use and maintenance of personal protective equipment (PPE) and safety apparatus.
  • Maintain accurate records of safety inspections, incidents, and training activities.
  • Liaise with regulatory authorities during inspections and audits, ensuring all legal requirements are met.
  • Promote continuous improvement in safety performance through proactive engagement and communication with all stakeholders.

Required Qualifications

  • Relevant Health & Safety Degree / Diploma OR Similar
  • Fully registereted with SACPCMP 
  • Proven experience as a Health & Safety Officer in the construction industry
  • Excellent knowledge of health and safety regulations
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills

Education

  • National Senior Certificate or equivalent.
  • Additional formal qualifications in occupational health and safety or construction management are advantageous.

Experience

  • Minimum of three years’ experience working as a Construction Safety Officer or in a related health and safety role within the construction sector.
  • Experience conducting risk assessments, audits, and accident investigations on construction sites.
  • Proven track record of enforcing compliance with health and safety legislation and standards.

Knowledge and Skills

  • Comprehensive knowledge of construction health and safety legislation, regulations and best practises applicable in South Africa.
  • Strong observational and analytical skills to identify hazards and assess risks effectively.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to engage with site personnel at all levels.
  • Ability to prepare detailed reports and maintain accurate documentation.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications and health and safety management software.
  • Strong organisational skills and the ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Further training or certification in construction project management or environmental health and safety.
  • Experience working in the Western Cape region or familiarity with local construction industry requirements.

Working Conditions

  • The role requires regular site visits to construction locations, often outdoors in various weather conditions.
  • Wearing of personal protective equipment is mandatory during site inspections.
  • The position involves full-time hours and may require occasional extended hours to meet project deadlines or respond to incidents.
  • Work may include exposure to construction hazards; adherence to safety protocols is essential at all times.
