At PEN Youth, we ignite hope by providing support and safe spaces for inner-city youth. Our youth services are divided into three groups: Primary School, High School, and Young Adults. We offer age-appropriate education support, mentorship and life skills, creative arts, and work-readiness and entrepreneurship development to empower young people to become responsible and innovative citizens. Our programmes are primarily situated in Arcadia and Sunnyside.

A coach in the PEN Young Children People Group will support and develop safe and enjoyable environments for learning and play to take place. As per the Young Children calendar, she will assess Daycare practitioners, determine levels of education and make and discuss recommendations. She will play an active advisory and consultant role in assisting Daycare centres to develop a high standard of teaching and learning through play, by incorporating relevant curricula. She will offer training and coaching to practitioners and facilitate weekly lesson planning. This is a Fixed-term contract for 10 months.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED & EXPERIENCE

  • Grade 12
  • Recognised NQF level 5 ECD qualification or diploma.
  • At least 2 – 3 years’ post-practical experience working with children in pre-school.
  • First Aid training.

MAIN JOB ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (INCLUDES BUT IS NOT LIMITED TO)

  • Assessment of Practitioners:
    • Conduct ongoing assessments of practitioners in accordance with the Young Children calendar.
    • Attend and take part in assessment feedback meetings with Daycare centre owners.
    • Provide support and monitor the practitioner’s progress on their growth plans.
  • Coaching visits:
    • Visit allocated Daycare Centres regularly.
    • Interact with practitioners and support classroom practice.
    • Monitor SOUNS, Lego, Miki-Maths and Living Kids Programmes in assigned daycares.
    • Document coaching, planning and reports on a weekly basis.
  • Training Presentation:
    • Plan and present training on ECD topics as assigned.
    • Continuously research and introduce new ideas and developments.
    • Take responsibility for attendance registers, payment and logistics of assigned training presentations.
    • Attend training as assigned.
  • Lesson planning:
    • Research and develop assigned themes.
    • Organise library activities for assigned themes.
    • Take responsibility for the attendance register and logistics for assigned lesson-planning sessions.
    • Set up stimulating theme tables.
  • Administrative tasks:
    • Plan weekly assessment and coaching visits.
    • Write weekly reports on coaching visits.
    • Report concerns re Daycare centres, practitioners and children to Support Centre Management.
    • Interact with Support Centre visitors as needed.
    • Support volunteer Programmes in Daycare Centres.
    • Take responsibility for registering new Daycare Centres with the ECD Support Centre, conducting annual practitioner interviews, and signing agreements.
    • Receive and receipt payments and submit to the Support Centre Administrator.
    • Record and monitor Support Centre equipment lent to Daycare Centres.
  • Meetings:
    • Attend the following meetings: Monthly staff meetings and Fellowship, Quarterly Young Children Program days.
    • Attend PEN fellowships on a rotation basis.
  • Growth of Pen Young Children:
    • Recruit new Daycare Centres by approaching owners and sharing PEN Young Children's vision and work to reach as many children as possible.
