Job Description
The Security Engineer is responsible for designing, implementing, and maintaining security solutions within the banking and finance environment to safeguard information assets and ensure compliance with regulatory requirements. This role involves proactive identification and mitigation of security risks, monitoring security systems, and responding to security incidents. The incumbent works onsite within the Johannesburg Metro area and collaborates closely with various internal teams to enhance the organisation’s overall security posture.
Key Responsibilities
- Design, deploy and manage security infrastructure including firewalls, intrusion detection and prevention systems, endpoint protection, and encryption technologies.
- Conduct security risk assessments and vulnerability analyses to identify weaknesses and implement appropriate controls.
- Monitor security alerts, logs and events, investigate anomalies, and respond to incidents in a timely and effective manner.
- Maintain and update security policies, standards and procedures to reflect the current threat landscape and regulatory requirements.
- Lead the implementation of new security tools and technologies to improve security effectiveness and efficiency.
- Collaborate with internal stakeholders to ensure security requirements are integrated into system designs and business processes.
- Provide technical guidance and support during security audits and compliance reviews.
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge of emerging threats, vulnerabilities, and industry best practises in information security.
- Support disaster recovery and business continuity planning as it relates to information security.
- Prepare and present detailed security reports and documentation for management and regulatory bodies.
Required Qualifications
- Relevant professional certification in information security or network security (for example, Certified Information Systems Security Professional, Certified Ethical Hacker, or equivalent).
- Proven experience in security engineering within the banking or financial services sector.
- CISSP®, CEH® - (Please provide copies of qualifications and ID)
Education
- A degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Cybersecurity, or a related discipline is essential.
Experience
- 8+ years in banking cybersecurity; ensures secure-by-design compliance.
- IAM, encryption, WAF, threat modelling, audit logging
- Demonstrable experience in configuring and managing security devices such as firewalls, intrusion prevention systems, and endpoint protection platforms.
- Experience working within a regulated environment, preferably in banking or financial services.
Knowledge and Skills
- In-depth understanding of information security principles, network protocols, and security technologies.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with attention to detail.
- Ability to interpret and apply regulatory requirements and industry standards related to information security.
- Proficient in security monitoring tools, log management and incident response processes.
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to convey technical information clearly to non-technical stakeholders.
- Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively within a team environment.
- Strong organisational and time management skills to handle multiple priorities effectively.
Preferred Qualifications
- Additional security certifications such as CISSP, CISM, or SANS GIAC.
- CISSP®, CEH®
- Experience in cloud security and securing hybrid IT environments.
- Knowledge of scripting or programming languages relevant to security automation.
- Experience with security frameworks such as ISO 27001, NIST or COBIT.
