Operations
Job Purpose
The Import Controller is responsible for managing and coordinating all import-related activities to ensure the timely and cost-effective movement of raw materials, packaging, and finished goods into the country. This role plays a critical part in supporting production, inventory management, and distribution in a fast-paced FMCG environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Import Coordination
- Manage the end-to-end import process from purchase order placement to delivery.
- Ensure compliance with international trade regulations, customs requirements, and company policies.
- Liaise with freight forwarders, shipping lines, clearing agents, and suppliers to track shipments.
- Documentation & Compliance
- Prepare, review, and manage import documentation (commercial invoices, packing lists, bill of lading, certificates of origin, etc.).
- Ensure HS codes, tariff classifications, and duty calculations are accurate.
- Monitor compliance with SARS (Customs) and other regulatory requirements.
- Cost Management
- Negotiate freight rates, clearance charges, and other logistics costs with service providers.
- Monitor landed costs to ensure accuracy and cost-effectiveness.
- Identify opportunities for cost savings within the import supply chain.
- Stakeholder Management
- Collaborate with procurement, finance, and production teams to align on stock requirements and delivery timelines.
- Communicate shipment status updates and proactively resolve delays or discrepancies.
- Build strong relationships with logistics partners and suppliers.
- Reporting & Systems
- Maintain accurate records of all import transactions.
- Prepare and submit regular reports on shipment status, lead times, and landed costs.
- Ensure ERP/supply chain systems are updated with accurate shipment data.
Qualifications & Experience
- Bachelor’s degree / Diploma in Supply Chain, Logistics, or International Trade (preferred).
- Minimum 3–5 years’ experience in imports/logistics, preferably within FMCG.
- Strong knowledge of customs regulations, import documentation, and Incoterms.
- Experience working with clearing agents, freight forwarders, and shipping lines.
- ERP system knowledge (SAP, Oracle, or similar) is advantageous.
