Areas of Responsibilities

  • Design of electrical substations including equipment layout, protection schemes, control systems, etc.
  • Develop single-line diagrams and detailed substation engineering drawings
  • Specify and procure substation equipment including transformers, circuit breakers, disconnect switches, and protection relays
  • Conduct short circuit and coordination studies for protection system design
  • Design grounding systems and perform grounding analysis calculations
  • Develop control and protection logic for substation automation systems
  • Coordinate with civil, structural, and mechanical engineers for integrated substation design
  • Perform commissioning and testing of new substation equipment and protection systems
  • Investigate substation equipment failures and develop corrective action plans
  • Maintain and update substation drawings, settings, and documentation
  • Ensure compliance with utility standards, IEEE standards, and NERC requirements
  • Develop cost estimates and project schedules for substation projects
  • Coordinate with operations and maintenance teams for planned outages and switching procedures
  • Support emergency response and system restoration activities

Education, Language & Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering
  • Professional Registration (Pr. Eng or Pr.Tech Eng) preferred

Experience

  • 5-10 years of experience in substation engineering or power systems
  • Proficiency in power system analysis software (ETAP, SKM, ASPEN, etc.)
  • Experience with SCADA and EMS systems
  • Experience with renewable energy interconnection
  • Project management experience

Knowledge

  • Knowledge of protection and control systems (SEL, GE, Schweitzer, etc)
  • Experience with AutoCAD and substation design software
  • Understanding of NERC standards and utility operating procedures
  • Knowledge of IEC 61850 communication protocols
  • Arc flash analysis and electrical safety expertise
  • Knowledge of environmental and regulatory requirements

Skills

  • Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills
  • Excellent technical writing and communication abilities
  • Ability to work in substation environments and follow safety protocols
