The Department of Social Development Professions is looking for a qualified, experienced social worker, registered in South Africa, with in-depth knowledge of all fields of social work, but with expertise in the scholarship of engagement and research supervision. The purpose of the post is to facilitate, coordinate and administer the learning process for students in theoretical and practical modules at undergraduate level, to supervise postgraduate students, to drive and lead core research activities, and to lead in the development and fostering of local, national and international collaborations as part of the engagement mission of the department.
In the case of an Associate Professor:
In addition to academic qualifications, the candidate should have extensive relevant experience (4 to 7 years) in facilitating learning and teaching in higher education. They should possess proven experience in research, and supervising students at various academic levels (undergraduate/masters/PhDs), with at least one graduate that completed a PhD under the candidate as main supervisor. The candidate should have experience in leading at least one collaborative research project.
In the case of a Senior Lecturer:
The candidate must have relevant experience (3 to 5 years) in facilitating learning and teaching in higher education. They should possess experience in research and post-graduate student supervision at various levels. The candidate should have experience in participating in at least one collaborative research project.
- Lecturing and taking full responsibility for various modules (both theoretical and practical components) according to the needs of and job allocation in the Department, including the co-ordination and administration of various modules
- Review, update and develop innovative academic curricula to ensure relevance and responsiveness to community needs
- To successfully supervise at all levels of postgraduate studies, particularly at the doctoral level
- Be able to perform independent research and lead collaborative research projects and publish in national and international journals accredited by the DHET
- To develop, foster and strengthen the relationships and collaborations with work-integrated learning partners
- To develop and coordinate national and international research and engagement collaborations
- To lead in the strategic prioritization of engagement in the department
- To develop, facilitate and manage short learning programmes in the department
- To demonstrate the integration of learning and teaching, research and engagement within the scholarship of engagement
- To represent and support the department on inter-faculty and inter-institutional committees
- To contribute to and timeously complete administrative and/or ad hoc tasks as assigned by the Head of the Department, Director of School and Dean of the Faculty;
- To take leadership roles within the department and if required, be willing to serve as Head of the Department

Qualifications
- A relevant doctoral degree (NQF level 10) Registration
- Must be registered as a social worker with SACSSP Experience
- At least 4 – 7 years of university level teaching and research experience for Associate Professor level, and 3 – 5 years of university level teaching and research experience for Senior Lecturer level.
- Evidence of experience working as a social worker for at least 3 years
- Successful completion of supervision as main supervisor for at least one PhD candidate on the Associate Professor level
- Experience as an external postgraduate examiner at a national level
- Have a proven track record of regular DHET accredited publications, nationally and internationally
- Experience in leading at least one collaborative research project for Associate Professor level and participating in at least one collaborative research project for Senior Lecturer level
- Proven ability to integrate learning and teaching, research and engagement under the scholarship of engagement
- Proven record of community engagement
- Evidence of experience in developing and fostering partnerships and collaborations
