CORE PURPOSE OF JOB


To facilitate teaching and learning in Applied Mathematics and Mathematics at undergraduate and postgraduate level, to contribute to the administration of the department as needed, and to undertake research.


KEY PERFORMANCE AREAS
•To facilitate and coordinate undergraduate (and potentially postgraduate) teaching and learning processes in the department.
•Update and develop teaching/learning materials to ensure that relevance and quality are maintained.
•To perform departmental and academic administration.
•To engage in inter-departmental and/or inter-faculty collaborative research in order to generate cross-disciplinary engagement and research outputs.
•To contribute to knowledge creation by conducting research and publishing accredited research outputs relevant to the field.
•To supervise honours and/or Master’s projects


CORE COMPETENCIES
•Possess sound knowledge of undergraduate level Applied Mathematics and Mathematics in fields such as mathematical modelling, numerical analysis, optimization and differential equations. A sub-specialty in one or more of the previously-mentioned fields is preferable for senior undergraduate and postgraduate lecturing and research (for example, but not limited to: Biomathematics, Finite Difference/Element Methods)
•Have experience at facilitating learning at undergraduate level, must be willing and able to teach large classes (100 - 400 students), and be able to coordinate the teaching of large classes.
•Possess the academic ability and personality to teach at all levels of the undergraduate and postgraduate programs.
•Possess excellent communication skills to engage internal and external stakeholders in departmental endeavours, for teaching and report writing.
•Extensive experience and competence with mathematical programming languages, especially Matlab or similar. Python experience also highly preferable.
•Sound research skills demonstrated through:
oPresented at local and/or international conferences.

REQUIREMENTS
•A Master’s degree in Applied Mathematics.
•Proven lecturing and teaching experience at an institute of higher education. With demonstrated experience of at least two (2) years teaching/relevant work experience in the field of Applied Mathematics at this level.
•At least one national or international presentation at a conference.
•Willingness to register and complete a PhD in Applied Mathematics within the next 5 years. A PhD degree or proof of enrolment for a PhD will be advantageous.
Note: Candidates invited to an interview will be expected to demonstrate their ability to lecture by presenting a 10-minute lecture on a topic which will be communicated to them prior to the interview.
