Our client is looking for a Mine Mechanical Engineer to lead and supervise the Mechanical Section of a mining operation. This role ensures the optimal performance, reliability, and safety of fixed plant equipment—particularly in coal handling and processing operations. The successful candidate will also oversee critical water reticulation systems, engineering projects, and ensure compliance with statutory safety requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Organise, coordinate, and supervise all mechanical plant operations and maintenance activities.

  • Oversee the efficient operation of the Coal Handling and Processing Plant (CHPP).

  • Manage water reticulation systems, including pump installation and maintenance from Lake Kariba to the township and power plant.

  • Execute and manage engineering projects and fabrication work.

  • Coordinate closely with the Mining Department to ensure equipment is available and operational.

  • Lead preventive and emergency maintenance across crushers, conveyor belts, screens, pumps, silos, thickeners, and other plant infrastructure.

  • Monitor plant performance, budgets, and drive continuous improvement in reliability and efficiency.

  • Ensure compliance with engineering standards, safety regulations, and statutory responsibilities.

  • Maintain a safe and clean working environment, ensuring hazard identification and risk mitigation.

  • Report accurately on plant status, maintenance work, and project progress.

Key Skills

  • Strong knowledge of mechanical systems used in coal processing (e.g. crushers, conveyors, thickeners, magnetic separators, lime dosing, dense media cyclones).

  • Expertise in water supply infrastructure, pump operations, and maintenance.

  • Ability to troubleshoot mechanical failures and implement long-term solutions.

  • Strong leadership, team coordination, and project management capabilities.

  • Proficient in MS Office and design/planning software.

  • Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving, and strategic planning skills.

  • Ability to lead and build high-performing teams, especially in technical environments.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

  • Strong attention to detail and adherence to safety protocols.

  • Capable of managing operational budgets and resources effectively.

  • Possession of a Class C driver’s licence is an added advantage.

  • Minimum of 10 years’ experience in a reputable workshop, with at least 3 years at department head level.

  • Experience with maintenance in coal processing environments is essential.

Qualifications

  • Grade 12 Certificate.

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering.

  • Registered with a professional engineering institution.
