CORE PURPOSE OF JOB

The Faculty of Science aims to strengthen its position in the field of Medical Biotechnology and Biomedical Microscopy. In line with this endeavour, a candidate is sought to facilitate the learning process for undergraduate and postgraduate students and contribute to research and engagement activities in the field of Medical Biotechnology and Biomedical Microscopy at the Nelson Mandela University.

KEY PERFORMANCE AREAS

  • Present lectures, practicals and techniques training in Medical Biotechnology and Biomedical Microscopy at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
  • Assist with curriculum development for a BSc Biotechnology programme, module co-ordination and administration of modules.
  • Assist laboratory students and researchers in the theory and application of Medical Biotechnology and Biomedical Microscopy in related disciplines.
  • Demonstrate the potential to contribute to the creation of knowledge by publishing research.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in a multicultural environment.
  • Be involved in the core administrative functions of the university. 
  • Continually engage in personal professional development programmes.
  • Perform administrative functions at Departmental and Faculty level.

CORE COMPETENCIES

 
  • Sound knowledge in medical biotechnology.
  • Sound knowledge in utilisation of microscopy techniques and operational modalities towards biomedical applications.
  • Practical experience (including sample preparation) in the utilisation of microscopy techniques and operational modalities towards biomedical applications
  • Experience in microtomy would be advantageous
  • Strong skills in the use of relevant computer software packages to process microscopy data
  • Ability to facilitate learning through blended and technologically-based teaching methods.
  • Publications in internationally recognised journals or participation in local and international scientific events would be advantageous
  • Promote engaged scholarship programmes
  • The ability to function independently, as well as in a team
  • Demonstrate good interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to function with ease in the University’s richly diverse working environment
  • Excellent organization and administration skills
  • Good time-management skills and the ability to perform under pressure
 

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

 
  • The candidate should have, as a minimum, a relevant masters degree in a Biomedical Sciences field, with an undergraduate degree or diploma in medical biotechnology.
  • The Masters must be achieved with a minimum average of 70%.
  • Be registered for, or qualify to register for a PhD in a Biomedical Imaging-related study.
  • Evidence of peer-reviewed publications in internationally recognised journals and participation at international conferences will be an advantage.  
  • Evidence of involvement in postgraduate teaching and supervision will be an advantage.
