CORE PURPOSE OF JOB

The purpose of this post is to develop and implement strategies to guide and support academics for effective use and integration of language, literacies and multilingualism in teaching, learning and assessment in accordance with the Nelson Mandela University Language Policy. The overall aim is to provide transformative academic development and support for student success.

KEY PERFORMANCE AREAS

  • To develop, implement and manage innovative practices to guide language, literacies and multilingualism at Nelson Mandela University
  • To contribute to and participate in specialist programmes to support academic staff to enhance language and literacies development in teaching and learning
  • To facilitate selected academic development/professional learning initiatives
  • To closely monitor, determine and support the needs of academic staff pertaining to learning and teaching matters
  • To liaise with relevant internal and external stakeholders in developing, implementing and benchmarking practices to guide language and literacies development at Nelson Mandela University
  • To conduct and monitor literacies and multilingualism research and the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) at Nelson Mandela University
  • To monitor and report on the implementation of language and literacies in line with the Nelson Mandela University Language Policy

 

 

CORE COMPETENCIES

  • To be thoroughly informed and familiar with the latest trends in terms of language education and multilingualism in Higher Education, both nationally and internationally;
  • To have a thorough understanding of the language needs of academic staff and students and the impact this has on academic success;
  • Ability to initiate and coordinate professional development programmes for staff at different levels
  • To have a thorough understanding of the Nelson Mandela University Language Policy and how it interfaces with staff and student development policies;
  • Comprehensive understanding of the principles and best practices related to teaching and learning development
  • Proven research competency in language, literacies, multilingualism and the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning.
  • Display excellent networking skills with internal and external partners and stakeholders;
  • Possess good leadership, management and motivational skills;
  • Have good communication (verbal and written); facilitation and presentation skills

REQUIREMENTS

In order to be considered for appointment to this post, candidates must possess a Masters degree in Applied Linguistics or Language Education

A minimum of 5 years’ experience in Higher Education of which at least 3 must be in the field of academic

development or language education
