CORE PURPOSE OF JOB

The Faculty of Humanities at Nelson Mandela University invites suitably qualified candidates to apply for the post of Senior Lecturer in the Department of Philosophy. In line with the university’s strategy towards the Revitalisation of the Humanities, the department seeks a candidate who has advanced capacity in the discipline and can undertake the core duties of teaching, research, supervision, academic administration and engagement. The successful candidate should have experience in postgraduate supervision, academic publishing, and delivering learning and teaching to diverse student groups. The department seeks a dynamic individual who is interested in reimagining Philosophy in the South African context and can contribute towards the development of the field in the contemporary context. The successful candidate will display broad sectoral understanding of debates within Philosophy specifically, and in the Humanities in general, and ability to push the discipline and its applicability to other domains of public life. The successful candidate must demonstrate a proven ability to handle large class teaching, ability to undertake academic administration independently, strong teamwork and have a general spirit of collegiality and teamwork.

KEY PERFORMANCE AREAS

  • Teach at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
  • Supervise at all postgraduate levels.
  • Conduct research, present at academic conferences, and publish in DHET-accredited academic journals to improve the research profile of the faculty.
  • Be in possession of a Doctoral qualification, specifically in the discipline of Philosophy.
  • Initiate and participate in academic and public engagements.
  • Contribute toward the further strengthening of scholarship in and the teaching of ethics pertaining to emerging technologies.

CORE COMPETENCIES

 
  • Knowledge of diverse philosophical fields, with preference for the following fields:  Phenomenology, Critical Theory, African Philosophy, Ethics.
  • Ability to teach large classes at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
  • Ability to supervise and mentor at all postgraduate levels.
  • Ability to conduct research independently.
  • Ability to manage time and deliver high-quality work under pressure.
  • The candidate must be technologically competent, e.g. able to teach online, and work with internal institutional systems such as Moodle and ITS.
  • Ability to work well in a multicultural, diverse and high-pressure environment and to deal with and resolve issues, problems, conflicts, and any crisis situation that may arise.
  • Ability to self-manage, and maintain professionalism and collegiality within the dynamic higher education environment.
  • Ability to engage with the discipline of Philosophy within the scholarship and practice of engagement.
 

REQUIREMENTS

 
  • A Doctoral qualification in Philosophy.
  • Extensive higher education teaching experience in the discipline of Philosophy.
  • Scholarly publications that are DHET-accredited.
  • Shortlisted candidates may be requested to undergo some form of competency assessment.
