Job Title: SMPP Supervisor

Location: Site Based – Mokopane, South Africa

Job Performance Criteria

Main Purpose of Job (Role):

Responsible for on-site management of all discipline-specific tasks, including but not limited to:

  • Safety, Health & People Management

  • Documentation Management and Reporting

Key Performance Areas and Indicators (Responsibilities):

Technical Expertise

  • Demonstrate extensive knowledge of SMPP specifications and standards.
  • Ensure thorough understanding of SMPP scope and area of responsibility.
  • Interpret construction drawings and models to ensure accuracy in construction activities.
  • Manage on-site constructability methodology for major construction tasks.
  • Provide solutions for technical issues related to construction.
  • Familiarity with commissioning procedures to assist with plant commissioning.
  • Knowledge of labour legislation and company policies and procedures.
  • Verify all equipment delivered to site with Materials Control, including equipment tag numbers, packing lists, and the Mechanical equipment list.
  • Receive handover and safe working certificates from Civil and Earthworks contractors before allowing mechanical contractors in the work area, maintaining a record of access dates.
  • Confirm equipment and tag numbers prior to installation, ensuring proper guard placement and safety precautions.
  • Oversee proper installation of structural steel and platework, including support and brace steel, dimensions, levels, holding down bolts, bolt threads, spacer plating, grating, grating clips, hand railing, and safe access.
  • Verify pipe routing and alignment against latest revision drawings and 3D models, confirming pipe sizes and line numbers, instrumentation, valves, flanges, nipples, and access to manual valves.
  • Report discrepancies and misalignments to Project Engineer and Construction Manager, identifying the root cause of errors.

Contract Management

  • Ensure full understanding of contractor scope.
  • Oversee contractor activities to meet construction schedule.
  • Manage contractor manpower, plant, and equipment to meet construction objectives.
  • Maintain accurate and current contractor daily diaries.
  • Manage Site Instruction process following procedures.

Quality Management

  • Ensure construction quality aligns with site quality control procedure.
  • Verify use of approved contractor quality plans (QCPs).
  • Monitor construction works to comply with project specifications, standards, and drawings.
  • Implement quality requirements/checklists as detailed in DRA Project Construction Procedure.
  • Ensure critical equipment is in good working condition.
  • Maintain current contractor quality records and documentation in site QC data book.
  • Identify and resolve punch list items.
  • Coordinate updates to as-built drawings.

Communications

  • Foster open and honest communication with contractors and suppliers.
  • Provide progress and deviation reports against project schedule.
  • Communicate construction and technical matters to Construction Manager and Discipline Engineer.
  • Maintain communication with site team and other discipline supervisors.
  • Encourage a positive and constructive atmosphere on site.

SHE Management

  • Understand DRA SHE specifications, Mines Health and Safety Act (Act 29 of 1996), Occupational Health and Safety Act (Act 85 of 1993), and relevant legislation of foreign countries.
  • Implement and maintain SHE management system on site.
  • Manage plan task observations according to PTO schedule.
  • Identify hazards and risks in all construction activities.
  • Prioritise elimination of unsafe acts and prompt resolution of unsafe conditions.
  • Final approval of risk assessments.
  • Communicate and address shortcomings in SHE procedures.
  • Ensure all work complies with approved project environmental and social impact assessments, plans, and legislation.
  • Assist Construction Manager in fulfilling responsibilities under mine legislation and SHE procedures.
  • Report safety deviations following project safety reporting procedure.

Job Requirements

Qualifications

Formal Qualifications:

  • Matric
  • Technical qualification, diploma, or degree in SMPP discipline (advantageous)
  • Section 13/26D trade certificate in mechanical discipline (essential)
  • SHE Management Courses (e.g. Legal liability, supervisor SHE course) (essential)

Memberships:

  • Registration with professional body (e.g. SACPCMP) (advantageous)

Experience

  • 5+ years applicable construction experience in discipline (essential)
  • 2-4 years applicable management experience in EPCM or Main contractor (advantageous)
