Main Purpose of Role:
The SMPP Supervisor is responsible for all on-site management within their discipline, ensuring the successful and timely completion of erection works in compliance with contract specifications and the project plan. Key areas of responsibility include:

- Schedule Management – planning, controlling, coordinating and monitoring construction activities to meet the overall project programme and key milestones

Key Performance Areas and Responsibilities
Technical Expertise
- Maintain comprehensive knowledge of SMPP specifications and standards.
- Fully understand the SMPP scope and area of responsibility.
- Interpret construction drawings and 3D models to ensure the correct execution of works.
- Manage onsite constructability methodologies for all major construction activities.
- Provide effective solutions for construction-related technical issues.
- Possess knowledge of commissioning procedures to support plant commissioning phases.
- Ensure compliance with labour legislation and DRA policies and procedures.
- Verify site-delivered equipment with Materials Control, confirming equipment tag numbers, approving packing lists, and cross-checking against mechanical equipment lists.
- Receive hand-over and safe working certificates from Civil and Earthworks contractors before permitting mechanical contractors access, maintaining clear records of access dates.
- Confirm equipment and tag numbers before installation, including verification of guard placement and overall safety integrity.
- Ensure correct installation of structural steel and platework, checking supports, braces, dimensions, levels, holding down bolts, bolt threads, spacer plating, gratings, grating clips, handrails, and safe access.
- Check pipe routing and alignment against the latest revision drawings and 3D models; confirm pipe sizes and line numbers. Verify the correct placement of instrumentation, valves, flanges, and nipples, and ensure access to manual valves.
- Report discrepancies and misalignments to the Project Engineer and Construction Manager, confirming root causes related to Civil, Steel, Mechanical, Piping, Equipment, or Drawings.
Contract Management
- Ensure a thorough understanding of contractor scopes.
- Manage contractor activities in line with the construction schedule.
- Oversee contractor manpower, plant, and equipment resources to meet project objectives.
- Ensure contractor daily diaries are accurate and up-to-date.
- Administer the Site Instruction process following established procedures.
Quality Management
- Manage construction quality in accordance with site quality control procedures.
- Ensure approved contractor quality plans (QCPs) are implemented and signed off.
- Verify that construction works comply with project specifications, standards, and drawings.
- Implement the quality requirements and checklists as detailed in the DRA Project Construction Procedure.
- Ensure quality-critical equipment is maintained in sound working order.
- Maintain current contractor quality records and documentation, including site QC data books.
- Initiate punch lists and coordinate timely resolution of outstanding items.
- Coordinate the updating of as-built drawings.
Communications
- Foster open, honest, and constructive communication with contractors and suppliers.
- Report progress and deviations against the project schedule.
- Report all construction and technical matters to the Construction Manager and Discipline Engineer.
- Maintain effective communication channels with the site team, including other discipline supervisors.
- Promote a positive atmosphere and strong morale across the site.
Safety, Health & Environmental (SHE) Management
- Understand and ensure compliance with DRA SHE specifications, the Mines Health and Safety Act (Act 29 of 1996), the Occupational Health and Safety Act (Act 85 of 1993), and any applicable foreign legislation.
- Implement and maintain the SHE management system on site.
- Manage planned task observations in accordance with the PTO schedule.
- Identify hazards and risks associated with all construction activities.
- Focus on the elimination of unsafe acts and ensure unsafe conditions are promptly rectified.
- Provide final approval of all risk assessments.
- Identify SHE shortcomings and communicate corrective measures in line with DRA specifications.
- Ensure all work complies with approved environmental and social impact assessments, plans, and legislation.
- Assist the Construction Manager in fulfilling duties relating to mine legislation and SHE procedures.
- Report safety deviations in accordance with project safety reporting procedures.

Qualifications
- Matriculation – Essential
- Technical qualification (diploma or degree) in the SMPP discipline – Advantageous
- Section 13/26D trade certificate – Mechanical discipline – Essential
- SHE Management courses (e.g. Legal Liability, Supervisor SHE course) – Essential
Memberships
- Registration with a recognised professional body, e.g. SACPCMP – Advantageous
Experience
- Minimum 5 years’ applicable construction-related experience within the discipline – Essential
- 2-4 years’ applicable management experience in EPCM or main contractor environments – Advantageous
