Our current priority is to enhance overall business performance in the medium to long term, focusing on operating strategically, sustainably, efficiently, and profitably. Tongaat Hulett is committed to revitalising assets that will generate cash flow and exploring new customer segments.

This role is based at Voermol Feeds, Maidstone, and reports directly to the Engineering Manager. The successful incumbent will ensure that technical drawings produced comply with all required standards, statutes, and design codes.

Purpose of the Role

To provide a specialised draughting service using Computer Aided Design (CAD) programmes or manual draughting principles and procedures. This includes creating technical drawings of parts, sub-systems, and complete assemblies or systems, illustrated in two- or three-dimensional formats with various views. Detailed technical specifications are represented through line styles, symbols, units of measurement, and notation systems. The role also involves preparing Bills of Materials (BOM) for a range of civil, electrical, and mechanical engineering works and projects, as well as participating in site consultations and technical meetings.

Key Accountabilities

  • Prepare draughting workplans and schedules; contribute to budget estimates for drawing office consumables and equipment.
  • Plan and schedule site surveys, inspections, and consultations required to prepare and obtain approval for design details and specifications.
  • Recommend and implement improvements to draughting processes, file referencing, recordkeeping, and document control systems.
  • Implement quality assurance standards to verify the accuracy and completeness of drawings prior to distribution.
  • Manage maintenance plans for drawing office equipment, ensuring scheduled inspections, calibrations, and servicing are conducted.

Computer Aided Draughting (CAD) and Technical Drawings

  • Produce new, revised, or modified drawings of parts, assemblies, and plant systems.
  • Refer to historical engineering records, supplier manuals, and technical literature to obtain specifications and dimensions.
  • Apply relevant standards and regulations (e.g. 'Red Book'/'Yellow Book') for the draughting and detailing of mechanical, structural, and machinery assemblies.
  • Consolidate data and information gathered from site consultations, sketches, and specification schedules.
  • Set up two- and three-dimensional drawing parameters on CAD/Solid Edge systems or prepare tools and materials for manual draughting.
  • Apply technical drawing techniques to illustrate objects to scale in various views (isometric, orthographic).
  • Detail geometric features using line styles, colour coding, and notation systems in line with draughting standards.
  • Present completed drawings to Engineering Management, incorporate approved changes, and obtain final authorisation prior to printing and circulation.
  • Manipulate data and perform calculations in the preparation of Bills of Materials (BOM) and related schedules.

Project Consultation and Draughting Activities

  • Study project scope relating to draughting requirements and participate in project meetings to obtain specifications and guidelines.
  • Undertake site measurements and translate engineering sketches or specifications into working drawings.
  • Collaborate with the project team to prepare detailed drawings depicting dimensions and arrangements of civil, electrical, and mechanical installations, fittings, and fixtures.
  • Prepare Bills of Materials (BOM) and verify that final project drawings and schedules comply with standards and design codes prior to approval circulation.

On-Site Advisory and Technical Engagements

  • Apply technical knowledge, working alongside Engineering Management, Engineers, and Technical Specialists, to undertake calculations for mill and pinion settings and other critical plant and machinery specifications.
  • Provide technical input during set-up, construction, assembly, installation, or alignment processes, referring to technical data and drawings.
  • Respond to technical enquiries relating to the assembly, configuration, or sequence of parts, sourcing and supplying relevant data and information.
  • Engage with contractors, providing technical guidelines and information to support the interpretation of specifications and technical details in drawings and schedules.

Draughting Office Administration

  • Index, reference, and file drawings in accordance with approved standards and filing procedures.
  • Apply document management procedures to name, store, and save files in the relevant computer folders.
