Job Description

The Financial Controller is responsible for overseeing the financial operations of the company, ensuring accuracy, compliance, and efficiency in all accounting processes. This role involves managing financial reporting, budgeting, forecasting, and internal controls, while supporting strategic decision-making through detailed financial analysis. The position demands a strong understanding of accounting principles within the environmental and waste sectors, with a focus on maintaining regulatory compliance and promoting financial integrity.

Key Responsibilities

  • Prepare and review monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements in accordance with relevant accounting standards and statutory requirements.
  • Manage the budgeting and forecasting process, ensuring alignment with company objectives and operational demands.
  • Develop, implement, and maintain internal financial controls and procedures to safeguard company assets.
  • Supervise and coordinate the activities of the finance team, ensuring timely and accurate completion of tasks.
  • Conduct detailed financial analysis to identify trends, variances, and opportunities for cost optimisation.
  • Ensure compliance with local tax laws, statutory reporting requirements, and company policies.
  • Collaborate with external auditors during financial audits and address audit queries effectively.
  • Support senior management by providing insightful financial advice and risk assessments.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of developments in accounting standards and environmental sector regulations affecting financial reporting.

Required Qualifications

  • Professional accounting qualification such as Chartered Accountant (CA), Chartered Certified Accountant (ACCA), or equivalent.
  • Relevant tertiary qualification in Accounting, Finance, or related field.

Experience

  • At least five years of experience in a senior financial management role, preferably within the environmental or waste management industry.
  • Proven track record of managing full financial cycles, including reporting, budgeting, and compliance.
  • Experience working with accounting software and enterprise resource planning systems.

Knowledge and Skills

  • Comprehensive knowledge of South African accounting standards, tax legislation, and corporate governance.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities with meticulous attention to detail.
  • Excellent organisational and time management skills to handle multiple priorities effectively.
  • Outstanding communication skills, both written and verbal, suitable for liaising with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Ability to lead and develop a finance team in a dynamic environment.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, particularly Excel.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in the environmental or waste management sectors.
  • Knowledge of sustainability reporting and environmental financial regulations.
  • Familiarity with advanced financial modelling techniques.
