CORE PURPOSE OF JOB


This post reports to the Head of Family Medicine at NMU. The key responsibilities are to:


• Coordinate the academic programme of medical students at the clinical training sites (primary care facilities in Nelson Mandela Bay Metro, Uitenhage Provincial Hospital and district hospitals in Sarah Baartman district)
• Facilitate appropriate teaching and learning relevant to the discipline of Family Medicine
• Coordinate and conduct relevant assessments of students on the clinical platforms.
• Provide supervision and mentorship of students at the clinical sites.
• Enhance the development of fit for purpose primary healthcare-oriented graduates.
• Foster positive relationships between the university and relevant stakeholders.
• Engage in Faculty Development relevant to the core purpose of the job.
• Support relevant research activities.

KEY PERFORMANCE AREAS
• To coordinate and oversee the academic training programme relevant to Family Medicine.
• To facilitate quality teaching and learning in the discipline of Family Medicine and Primary care.
• To support and contribute to interprofessional learning and collaborative practice.
• To engage in Faculty development and scholarship of higher education
• To working collaboratively with staff and management at clinical sites.
• To contribute to quality patient care at clinical training sites,
• To engage in research activities, including the supervision of undergraduate and post graduate Health Science students.

 

KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED
1. Knowledge and understanding of Primary Health Care and the District Health System in South Africa
2. Knowledge, skills and expertise appropriate for a specialist Family Physician.
3. Experience in teaching undergraduate health professional students.
4. Interest and engagement in Health Professions Education.
5. Ability to work flexibly in Interprofessional teams in the teaching and development of students in the Medical School and Faculty of Health Sciences.
6. Good communication and interpersonal skills and able to work in a team.
7. Recognise and deal with cultural diversity, and establish trust, credibility and respect with the medical programme team, medical students and the clinical team at the district hospital.
8. Experience in engaging with relevant committees including community engagement.
9. Ability to consult and provide advice, facilitate discussion, and resolve any areas of conflict.

 

POST REQUIREMENTS
Qualifications and experience
• MBChB (or equivalent) degree
• Completed the FCFP exam and/or a Masters degree in Family Medicine
• Current registration with the HPCSA – medical practitioner in independent practice or as a Family Medicine Specialist
• A postgraduate qualification in Health Professions Education or at least 2 years’ experience in teaching and learning.
• Computer literacy
• Valid driver’s licence
