CORE PURPOSE OF JOB


The main purpose of the job is to assist technicians and lecturers by providing for laboratory operational requirements, namely, preparing for undergraduate practicals and providing support for research laboratories.


KEY PERFORMANCE AREAS
-Assist with the preparation, setup, and clearing of equipment for undergraduate practical sessions, as well as assist in research laboratory activities.
-Assist with maintaining laboratory equipment and glassware in laboratories.
-Prepare and manage laboratory waste for safe storage prior to disposal.
-Monitor and maintain liquid nitrogen and CO2 levels required for cell storage and growth.
-Ensure cryogenic canisters containing critical samples are consistently maintained at appropriate levels.
-Collect chemicals and laboratory supplies from stores while adhering to correct protocols.
-Maintain a clean, organized and safe laboratory working environment.
-Assist with general administrative duties.
-Maintain inventory lists of chemicals, consumables and laboratory equipment.
-Maintain and update Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and Safety Data Sheets (SDS).
-Serve as the department's Health and Safety Officer and First Aid Officer.

CORE COMPETENCIES
- Knowledge of chemicals and laboratory equipment, and the correct usage/storage thereof.
- Ability to set up laboratory equipment.
-Ability to work with lecturers, professional staff, researchers and undergraduate/postgraduate students.
-Computer literacy and good administrative skills.
-Good written and verbal communication skills.
-Knowledge of OHSA regulations.

REQUIREMENTS
- A minimum qualification of Grade 12, including Life Sciences as a subject.
