Job Overview

We are seeking a skilled, hands-on Maintenance Technician to support the day-to-day maintenance and upkeep of Mantuma Camp, located within the uMkhuze Game Reserve. The successful candidate will be responsible for ensuring that all guest accommodation, public facilities, back-of-house areas, staff accommodation and infrastructure remain safe, operational and presented to the highest hospitality standards.

This role requires a multi-skilled individual with experience across electrical, plumbing, carpentry, painting and general building maintenance. Working within a remote bush environment, the Maintenance Technician will play a vital role in preserving the guest experience by responding promptly to maintenance requests, carrying out preventative maintenance programmes and ensuring minimal disruption to lodge operations.

The successful candidate must be self-motivated, solutions-driven and capable of working independently while maintaining high standards of safety, quality and environmental responsibility.

Key Responsibilities: 

Preventative Maintenance

  • Conduct routine inspections of guest accommodation, public areas, offices and staff facilities.
  • Perform preventative maintenance in accordance with scheduled maintenance programmes.
  • Identify potential maintenance issues before they impact operations or guest satisfaction.
  • Ensure all equipment and facilities remain safe, functional and compliant with company standards.

General Maintenance

  • Carry out plumbing repairs including taps, toilets, pipes, drains and water systems.
  • Perform basic electrical repairs including lighting, switches, sockets and electrical fittings (within competency limits).
  • Complete carpentry repairs including doors, windows, locks, furniture and cabinetry.
  • Undertake painting, tiling, plastering and general building repairs.
  • Repair fixtures, fittings and guest room equipment.
  • Maintain pathways, fencing, signage and camp infrastructure.

Plant & Equipment Maintenance

  • Assist with the maintenance of generators, pumps, boreholes, geysers and water reticulation systems.
  • Monitor and maintain air-conditioning units and refrigeration equipment where applicable.
  • Report major equipment failures requiring specialist contractors.
  • Ensure all plant rooms and maintenance areas remain clean, organised and compliant.

Grounds & Facilities

  • Assist in maintaining landscaped areas, pathways and outdoor facilities.
  • Monitor the condition of guest recreational areas and communal facilities.
  • Support environmental sustainability initiatives through responsible maintenance practices.

Guest & Operational Support

  • Respond promptly to maintenance requests raised by operational departments.
  • Minimise disruption to guests while carrying out repairs.
  • Work closely with Housekeeping, Front Office, Food & Beverage and Management to resolve maintenance concerns efficiently.
  • Be available for emergency maintenance call-outs when required.

Health, Safety & Compliance

  • Comply with Occupational Health & Safety policies and procedures.
  • Ensure tools and equipment are operated safely and stored securely.
  • Follow safe working practices when using electrical equipment, ladders and power tools.
  • Report hazards, incidents and unsafe conditions immediately.
  • Work in accordance with conservation and environmental requirements applicable within a protected game reserve.

Inventory & Administration

  • Maintain accurate maintenance records and job logs.
  • Assist in controlling maintenance inventory, spare parts and consumables.
  • Report stock shortages and recommend replacement equipment when necessary.
  • Support contractor supervision where required.

Education

  • Grade 12 (Matric).
  • Trade Test or relevant qualification in Electrical, Plumbing, Building Maintenance or similar discipline is advantageous.
  • Health & Safety certification would be beneficial.

Experience

  • Minimum 5 years' experience in general maintenance or handyman services with at least 2 years in a managerial role
  • Previous experience within hospitality, lodges, hotels or resorts is highly advantageous.
  • Experience maintaining generators, water systems and general building infrastructure.
  • Experience working in remote locations or game reserves would be advantageous

WORKING CONDITIONS

This role is based at Mantuma Camp within the uMkhuze Game Reserve and requires:

  • Willingness to work weekends, public holidays and shifts as operationally required.
  • Availability for after-hours emergency maintenance call-outs.
  • Valid South African driver's licence.
  • Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
  • Physical fitness to perform manual maintenance duties.
  • Ability to work safely within a protected wildlife environment.
