Job Description

The Leads Trail Guide is responsible for planning, leading and delivering exceptional guided trail experiences to guests in the Limpopo region. This role requires a strong commitment to guest safety, environmental conservation, and providing engaging interpretative commentary on local flora, fauna, culture and history. The successful candidate ensures the smooth operation of trail activities while fostering a memorable and educational experience for all participants.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

  • Lead groups safely on foot or vehicle-based trails through natural and cultural sites, ensuring adherence to established routes and safety protocols.
  • Provide informative and engaging commentary on the local environment, wildlife, indigenous culture, and historical context relevant to the trail.
  • Conduct thorough pre-trail briefings covering safety guidelines, trail expectations, and environmental considerations.
  • Monitor environmental conditions and guest wellbeing, adapting the pace or route as necessary to ensure safety and comfort.
  • Manage group dynamics professionally, ensuring an inclusive and respectful atmosphere throughout the trail experience.
  • Maintain accurate records of trail activities, guest feedback, and any incidents, reporting promptly to management.
  • Assist with the preparation and maintenance of trail equipment and supplies, ensuring all gear is in good working order.
  • Promote sustainable tourism practises and respect for local communities and natural habitats.
  • Respond effectively to emergencies, administering first aid where required and coordinating with emergency services as necessary.
  • Collaborate with other team members and departments to enhance the overall guest experience and operational efficiency.

Required Qualifications

  • Relevant qualification in outdoor leadership, environmental studies, tourism, or a related discipline.
  • Valid first aid certification suitable for outdoor and remote environments.
  • Strong knowledge of local wildlife, ecology, and cultural heritage of the Limpopo region.
  • Demonstrable experience in leading guided tours or trail expeditions.

Education

  • Minimum of a National Senior Certificate or equivalent.
  • Additional professional training in guiding, conservation, or hospitality is advantageous.

Experience

  • At least two years of experience working as a trail guide, safari guide, or in a similar role within the travel and tourism sector.
  • Experience working in natural and wildlife environments, preferably within South Africa.
  • Proven ability to manage groups and handle challenging outdoor situations calmly and effectively.

Knowledge and Skills

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage diverse audiences.
  • Sound understanding of safety practises and risk management in outdoor settings.
  • Ability to interpret and convey complex information about ecology, geology, and culture in an accessible manner.
  • Strong observational skills and attention to detail.
  • Physical fitness and stamina to lead trails over varied and sometimes challenging terrain.
  • Fluency in English; additional local language skills are an advantage.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Professional guiding accreditation or membership with recognised guiding bodies.
  • Additional first aid or emergency response certifications.
  • Experience with conservation projects or community-based tourism initiatives.
  • Familiarity with GPS navigation and trail mapping technology.

Working Conditions

  • The role requires working outdoors in varying weather conditions, including heat and occasional rain.
  • Physical activity includes walking long distances, sometimes on uneven or steep terrain.
  • Working hours may include early mornings, evenings, weekends and public holidays as required by guest schedules.
  • The position involves interacting with diverse groups of guests from different cultural backgrounds.
  • Live in postion 6 weeks on 2 weeks off
  • Food allowance
