CORE PURPOSE OF JOB
Nelson Mandela University, located along a dynamic coastal environment where marine, estuarine, fluvial, and aeolian systems intersect with the structural geology of the Cape Supergroup, invites applications for a Lecturer/Senior Lecturer position in the Department of Geosciences. The Department seeks to strengthen and expand its teaching and research capacity by appointing a candidate with expertise in Geophysics, Hydrogeology, and/or Geochemistry, or related fields within the geosciences. The successful candidate will contribute to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, develop an independent research programme, supervise postgraduate students, and participate in departmental and institutional activities. At Senior Lecturer level, the candidate will be expected to demonstrate academic leadership, sustained research output, and postgraduate supervision experience. The appointee will also be expected to strengthen collaboration with industry, government, and research entities, and contribute to transdisciplinary initiatives such as AEON, ESSRI, the Institute for Coastal and Marine Research, and the Ocean Sciences Campus.
KEY PERFORMANCE AREAS
- Facilitate and enhance teaching and learning at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
- Develop, publish, and sustain a productive research programme.
- Supervise postgraduate students (Honours, Master's, and Doctoral levels where applicable).
- Contribute to curriculum development and innovation in geosciences education.
- Facilitate field-based teaching in areas such as coastal processes, structural geology, and geohydrology.
- Engage with industry, government, and community stakeholders.
- Participate in departmental administration and academic citizenship.
CORE COMPETENCIES
- Advanced disciplinary knowledge in Geophysics, Hydrogeology, Geochemistry, or related geoscience fields.
- Demonstrated teaching and learning facilitation skills in higher education.
- Proven or emerging research track record appropriate to career stage.
- Ability to supervise postgraduate students (required for Senior Lecturer level).
- Evidence of, or potential for, attracting external research funding.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to contribute to interdisciplinary and collaborative research initiatives
REQUIREMENTS
For Lecturer:
- A MSc in Geological Sciences or Applied Geosciences.
- Evidence of emerging research output (publications and/or conference contributions).
- Two years experience in teaching or facilitating learning at tertiary level.
For Senior Lecturer:
- A PhD in Geological Sciences or Applied Geosciences.
- A sustained record of accredited research publications.
- Proven experience in postgraduate supervision (Master's and/or Doctoral).
- Demonstrated ability to contribute to curriculum development and academic leadership.
- One or more years of experience in tertiary level education.
Additional Advantages (applicable to both levels):
- Experience in GIS and Remote Sensing.
- Competence in data analysis, numerical modelling, or geochemical/geophysical analytical techniques.
- Programming skills (e.g., R or Python).
