Primary Purpose (Role)

The Construction Manager is responsible for overseeing all aspects of construction management, including:

  • Health, Safety and Environmental (HSE) Management
  • Construction Quality Management
  • Construction Schedule Management
  • Documentation Management
  • Materials Management
  • People Management
  • Accommodation and Site Office Management
  • Reporting

 

Key Performance Areas (Responsibilities)

 

Technical Expertise

  • Ensure the implementation of best construction practises.
  • Coordinate construction efforts effectively across disciplines and contractors.
  • Apply DRA construction management processes efficiently to the project.
  • Ensure compliance with current construction legislation and licensing requirements.
  • Manage onsite constructability methodologies for all major construction activities.

 

Construction Management

  • Manage construction in accordance with DRA or project-specific Construction Management Procedures and associated site procedures.
  • Ensure the project programme and key milestones are implemented and proactively managed.
  • Oversee contractor manpower, plant, equipment and materials to meet progress and quality objectives.
  • Develop and implement an effective materials management system onsite.
  • Facilitate communication and coordination through regular meetings with all contractors to monitor progress, manage contractor interfaces and maintain records.
  • Prepare and provide comprehensive construction reports, including safety, quantity, progress, quality, and manpower/resourcing data.
  • Manage all site documentation.
  • Oversee site accommodation and construction facilities management.
  • Implement and maintain a robust security management system.
  • Contribute to the development of “Site Rules” and procedures for inclusion in DRA protocols based on lessons learnt.
  • Participate in site staff performance reviews, discipline, and other management processes.
  • Foster a positive and constructive morale and atmosphere across the site.

 

Quality Management

  • Ensure full implementation and compliance with all site procedures.
  • Maintain adherence to the Construction Quality Control procedure.
  • Manage the punch-list and construction completion processes.
  • Oversee construction quality documentation, including QCPs, certificates, data books, test results, and inspections.

 

Client Relations

  • Manage the relationship with the Client and Operations teams onsite.
  • Ensure delivery of project objectives that meet or exceed Client expectations.
  • Resolve client issues promptly and effectively.
  • Keep Clients regularly informed and updated on project status.
  • Maintain professional and respectful interactions with all Client representatives.
  • Ensure Operations teams are fully integrated into the construction process.

 

HSE Management

  • Understand and ensure compliance with DRA HSE specifications, the Mines Health and Safety Act 1996, the Occupational Health and Safety Act 1993, and any applicable foreign legislation.
  • Implement and maintain the HSE management system onsite.
  • Manage the planned task observation schedule.
  • Identify hazards and risks associated with all construction activities.
  • Focus on eliminating unsafe acts and ensuring unsafe conditions are promptly rectified.
  • Approve all risk assessments before commencement of work.
  • Coordinate development and implementation of project-specific emergency response and recovery plans appropriate to identified risks.
  • Communicate incident details and corrective measures from other sites to the project team.
  • Liaise with the Client to determine “Site Specific” HSE requirements for inclusion in contract documents and maintain compliance.
  • Review and recommend revisions to standards where investigations highlight shortcomings.
  • Ensure all works comply with the Environmental Management Plan (EMP) and Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA).
  • Manage on-site appointments of supervisors to assist in work supervision.
  • Promote a safety culture that prioritises the health and safety of frontline employees.

Qualifications

  • Tertiary qualification (diploma or degree) – Essential
  • BSc in Construction Management – Advantageous

 

Experience

  • 6-8 years’ project-related experience in a construction management role – Essential
  • 10+ years’ general experience in the construction environment – Essential
  • Experience in earthworks, including terraces and roads – Essential
  • Experience in major civil construction (e.g., mill bases) – Essential
  • Experience in structural steel and mechanical equipment erection and installation – Essential
  • Experience in electrical and instrumentation installation – Essential
  • Experience in cold commissioning of completed sections – Essential

 

Competencies

  • HSE Management training (including legal liability, HIRA, incident investigation techniques) – Essential
  • Behavioural management training – Advantageous

 

Memberships

  • SACPCMP – Registered Construction Manager – Essential
