Job Description
The Lodge Manager is responsible for the overall management and operation of the lodge to ensure a high standard of guest experience, efficient service delivery, and sustainable business practises. The role includes overseeing daily lodge activities, managing staff, maintaining guest satisfaction, and ensuring compliance with health, safety, and environmental regulations. The Lodge Manager represents the lodge in the local community and liaises with suppliers, tour operators, and other stakeholders to drive occupancy and profitability.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage all aspects of lodge operations including guest services, housekeeping, food and beverage, maintenance, and security.
- Recruit, train, and supervise lodge staff to maintain professional standards and enhance team performance.
- Develop and implement operational policies and procedures to ensure smooth running of the lodge in accordance with company standards and local regulations.
- Monitor guest feedback and address any issues promptly to maintain high levels of customer satisfaction.
- Prepare and manage budgets, monitor financial performance, and implement cost control measures.
- Coordinate with suppliers and manage inventory to ensure adequate stock levels and timely procurement of goods and services.
- Ensure compliance with health and safety standards, environmental regulations, and licencing requirements.
- Promote the lodge through marketing initiatives and build relationships with travel agents, tour operators, and other partners.
- Report regularly to senior management on operational performance, guest satisfaction, and financial results.
- Foster a positive working environment that supports teamwork, staff development, and retention.
Required Qualifications
- Relevant qualification in Hospitality Management, Tourism, Business Administration or related field.
- Proven experience in lodge, hotel, or resort management, preferably within a safari or eco-tourism environment.
- Strong leadership skills with experience managing diverse teams.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Sound financial acumen and experience managing budgets.
- Knowledge of health and safety regulations applicable to hospitality operations.
- Proficient in using standard office software and property management systems.
Education
- Bachelor’s degree in Hospitality Management, Tourism, Business Administration or equivalent qualification is preferred.
Experience
- Minimum of five years’ experience in a management role within the hospitality or tourism sector.
- Experience working in East Africa or similar international environments is advantageous.
- Demonstrated ability to manage remote or rural lodge operations effectively.
Knowledge and Skills
- Comprehensive understanding of lodge operations and guest service standards.
- Strong organisational and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to lead and motivate teams in a multicultural setting.
- Excellent conflict resolution and customer service skills.
- Familiarity with sustainable tourism principles and environmental conservation practises.
- Fluency in English; knowledge of local languages is advantageous.
Preferred Qualifications
- Additional training or certification in Safari or Eco-tourism management.
- First aid and emergency response certification.
- Experience working with international guests and tour operators.
- Knowledge of local culture and customs to enhance guest experience and community relations.
Working Conditions
- The role is based at a lodge in a rural or wilderness setting, requiring adaptability to remote working conditions.
- Working hours are full-time and may include evenings, weekends, and public holidays to meet operational needs.
- Accommodation and meals are typically provided as part of the employment package.
- Occasional travel within the region may be required to liaise with partners or attend training.
- Exposure to outdoor conditions, including heat, dust, and wildlife environments, is expected.
