Job Title: Mechanical Winder Engineer
Location: Woodmead
Primary Purpose (Role):
To undertake engineering and discipline-specific project design activities associated with concept, pre-feasibility, feasibility studies, EPCM and EPC projects.
Main Functions Include (but are not limited to):
- Design Engineering
- Technical Support
- Package Management

- Commissioning
- Documentation and Handover
Key Performance Areas (Responsibilities)
Engineering
- Focus on shaft and hoist design, shaft repair, and project planning.
- Design, configuration, documentation, and specification activities for hoisting projects.
- Lead design and commissioning activities on hoisting projects, providing after-hours engineering support to customers when required.
- Execute engineering tasks and coordinate engineering efforts of other project team members on large and/or complex projects.
- Provide platform and process support for large projects.
- Support proposals and new business departments with technical input (product and process related) during tender preparation.
- Offer general technical support to Project Engineers.
- Deliver sound engineering and design input to projects and services, adhering to QA procedures.
- Compile functional specifications and participate in clarification meetings to ensure projects are executed on sound engineering principles and according to specifications.
- Report project or service progress and status to the Project Manager.
- Arrange and participate in design, manufacturing, commissioning, and Site Acceptance Tests (SAT).
- Provide general client support to resolve technical problems.
- Promote and ensure compliance with company's Safety, Health, Environmental and Quality systems and procedures within the project team.
- Ensure discipline designs comply with client standards, industry standards, relevant legislation, and quality requirements.
- Develop innovative, detailed designs for specific disciplines following good engineering practises.
- Provide design interface coordination between disciplines.
- Validate that (certified) design information received from vendors, contractors, and consultants is accurate and interfaces correctly with other designs.
- Ensure effective peer review and approval of discipline designs.
- Drive continuous improvement, lessons learnt, value engineering, fit-for-purpose solutions, and implementation of the latest technologies.
- Assume responsibility for the engineering discipline sign-off.
- Interface with internal and external design and drafting disciplines.
- Provide discipline inputs for studies and proposals.
- Deliver engineering support to the site team.
- Conduct commissioning discipline activities.
- Manage mark-up and back-drafting of redline drawings.
Operational Management
- Contribute actively to all HSE matters, promoting a total safety culture.
- Ensure compliance with relevant project procedures.
- Ensure fabrication, manufacturing, and construction drawings are issued in line with the project programme.
- Manage the programme (time), cost, quality, risk, and scope for assigned procurement packages.
- Ensure assigned packages are installed or constructed according to project and vendor specifications.
- Manage, inspect, and release procurement, fabrication, and construction items within the area of discipline and responsibility.
- Participate fully in the Total Safety Culture of DRA and adhere to site safety requirements.
- Assist with the commissioning of assigned packages in accordance with project and vendor specifications.
- Produce structured, accurate, complete, and well-presented reports.
- Maintain proactive communication with the project team regarding discipline interfaces and problem-solving.
Financial Management
- Manage personal and design budget man-hours effectively.
- Manage budget allocations per discipline package.
- Ensure designs are produced in accordance with capital budgets and quantity requirements.
- Apply suitable contract management to managed procurement packages.
- Adhere strictly to proper change management procedures.
Client Relations
- Conduct all client interactions professionally and respectfully.
- Keep clients informed and updated on the status of project technical aspects.
- Ensure DRA remains the client’s engineering service provider of choice.
- Liaise and coordinate with the client’s discipline engineers to ensure compliance with project and client requirements and specifications.

Qualifications
- Degree or Diploma in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering (Essential)
- Professional Engineering Technologist or Professional Engineer status (Essential)
Experience
- Minimum of 5 years’ experience in Winding Rope Technology (Essential)
- Minimum of 5 years’ experience in Mechanical Safety, Rigging, and Hydraulic Systems (Essential)
- Minimum of 5 years’ experience in Medium Voltage, Switching, and Electrical Protection (Essential)
- Experience in Conveyor Belt Technology (Desirable)
Knowledge Areas
- Experience working within an EPCM/Mining environment (Essential)
- Safety and Risk Management (Essential)
- Knowledge of ISO 9001, ISO 14001 & ISO 45001 (Advantageous)
- Sound technical knowledge in a multi-disciplinary environment (Advantageous)
