Job Description
The Interior Designer develops and implements creative and functional interior design solutions for hospitality and tourism-related projects within the travel and leisure industry. This role is responsible for delivering interior design concepts that enhance guest experience and align with brand standards, while ensuring practical and aesthetic coherence across all spaces.
Key Responsibilities
- Collaborate with project managers and clients to understand design requirements and objectives specific to travel, leisure, tourism and hospitality environments.
- Prepare detailed interior design plans, including space layouts, colour schemes, furniture selections, lighting, finishes and decorative elements.
- Create mood boards, sketches, 3D renderings and sample boards to communicate design concepts effectively.
- Select appropriate materials and furnishings that meet operational needs, durability standards, and budget constraints.
- Coordinate with suppliers, contractors and vendors to source and procure design components in a timely manner.
- Ensure compliance with health and safety regulations, accessibility standards and environmental sustainability best practises throughout design and implementation phases.
- Conduct site visits to monitor project progress, quality of workmanship and adherence to design specifications.
- Manage multiple projects simultaneously while maintaining high attention to detail and meeting deadlines.
- Keep abreast of current trends, innovations and emerging technologies in interior design within the hospitality sector.
- Prepare and present reports, proposals and budgets related to interior design projects.
Required Qualifications
- Formal qualification in Interior Design or a related discipline from a recognised institution.
- Demonstrable portfolio showcasing a range of completed interior design projects, preferably within hospitality or tourism environments.
Education
- Bachelor’s degree or higher in Interior Design, Interior Architecture or a closely related field.
Experience
- Minimum of three years’ professional experience in interior design, with a focus on travel, leisure, tourism or hospitality sectors.
- Proven experience managing design projects from concept through to completion.
Knowledge and Skills
- Strong understanding of interior design principles, spatial planning, colour theory and material selection.
- Proficiency in design software such as AutoCAD, SketchUp, Revit, Adobe Creative Suite or equivalent tools.
- Excellent visualisation and presentation skills.
- Ability to interpret architectural drawings and technical specifications.
- Strong organisational and time management skills with the ability to prioritise effectively.
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, for effective client liaison and team collaboration.
- Attention to detail and commitment to delivering high-quality design solutions.
- Knowledge of relevant health and safety legislation and accessibility requirements.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience working within or for the travel, leisure, tourism or hospitality industry.
- Familiarity with sustainable design principles and environmentally friendly materials.
- Membership of a recognised professional interior design body.
Working Conditions
- Office-based role located in Constantia, with occasional site visits around the City of Cape Town and surrounding areas.
- Full-time hours, typically Monday to Friday, with flexibility required to meet project deadlines.
- Work involves both desk-based design tasks and physical site inspections.
- Occasional travel to supplier showrooms and project locations may be required.
- A collaborative work environment with interaction across multiple departments and external stakeholders.
