Job Title: Mechanical Engineer

 

Location: Zimbabwe

 

Primary Purpose:

To undertake engineering and discipline project design activities across concept, pre-feasibility, feasibility studies, EPCM and EPC projects, ensuring delivery of high-quality outputs that conform to client and industry standards.

 

Main Responsibilities:

  • Design Engineering: Develop innovative and detailed engineering designs adhering to best practise and client requirements.
  • Technical Support: Provide technical assistance throughout project phases, supporting internal teams and site operations.
  • Package Management: Manage assigned procurement packages, ensuring compliance with scope, schedule, cost and quality requirements.
  • Site Support and Commissioning: Assist with on-site activities, including commissioning, to ensure smooth project execution.
  • Documentation and Handover: Prepare and manage comprehensive documentation to support project close-out and handover.

 

Key Performance Areas (Responsibilities):

1. New Business Development

  • Identify and prospect new leads and clients through networking and other channels to generate interest.
  • Develop persuasive approaches to encourage potential clients to partner with DRA.
  • Support the Country Manager in maintaining a robust pipeline of business opportunities.
  • Prioritise and nurture leads to convert into viable projects.
  • Expand DRA’s project footprint within global markets.
  • Apply negotiation strategies by assessing risks, benefits, and partner requirements.
  • Assist with contract development and negotiation to secure new business.
  • Maintain confidentiality to protect DRA’s intellectual property and commercial interests.
  • Continuously enhance professional knowledge through learning and engagement with relevant industry bodies.

 

2. Client Relationship Building

  • Research and cultivate relationships with new clients.
  • Identify key decision-makers and influencers within client organisations.
  • Maintain and strengthen existing client relationships to secure repeat business.
  • Engage in industry networking to broaden business reach.

 

3. Engineering

  • Produce innovative, accurate designs in accordance with good engineering practise.
  • Design conveyor and piping systems within the area of responsibility, subject to review by the relevant BMH or piping technical lead.
  • Ensure designs comply with client standards, industry regulations, and applicable legislation.
  • Coordinate design interfaces across disciplines to ensure integration and coherence.
  • Verify the accuracy of certified design data received from vendors, contractors and consultants.
  • Facilitate effective peer review and approval of discipline designs.
  • Implement continuous improvement initiatives, including lessons learnt, value engineering, and adoption of new technologies.
  • Take responsibility forthe engineering discipline sign-off.
  • Collaborate with internal and external design and drafting teams.
  • Contribute discipline inputs for studies and proposals.
  • Provide engineering support to site teams and participate in commissioning activities.
  • Manage markup and back-draughting of redline drawings.

 

4. Operational Management

  • Actively contribute to Safety, Health and Environmental (SHE) matters and promote a culture of total safety.
  • Ensure compliance with relevant project procedures and standards.
  • Oversee issuance of fabrication, manufacturing and construction drawings in line with project schedules.
  • Manage time, cost, quality, risk and scope for assigned procurement packages.
  • Verify that installation and construction meet project and vendor specifications.
  • Inspect and approve procurement, fabrication and construction items within the area of responsibility.
  • Participate actively in site safety initiatives and promote a total safety culture.
  • Assist with the commissioning of assigned packages according to project and vendor requirements.
  • Produce structured, accurate, complete and well-presented reports.
  • Maintain proactive communication within the project team regarding discipline interfaces and problem-solving.

 

5. Financial Management

  • Manage personal and design/draughting budgeted man-hours efficiently.
  • Oversee budgets allocated to disciplines or procurement packages.
  • Ensure designs are delivered within capital budgets and quantity constraints.
  • Apply appropriate contract management practises for procurement packages under your control.
  • Strictly adhere to change management procedures.

 

6. Client Relations

  • Conduct all client interactions professionally and respectfully.
  • Keep clients regularly informed and updated on technical project progress.
  • Ensure DRA remains the client’s preferred engineering services provider.
  • Liaise and coordinate with client discipline engineers to ensure compliance with project and client requirements.
