CORE PURPOSE OF JOB


The core purpose of this academic support post is to implement and support Nelson Mandela University’s innovation and technology transfer strategic and operational objectives within the Innovation Office.


KEY PERFORMANCE AREAS


The Innovation Office at the Nelson Mandela University is responsible for the identification, protection, and management of the Nelson Mandela University’s intellectual property (IP). The Innovation Office manages a diverse range of externally funded research projects and is involved in spin-off and start-up companies. The Technology Transfer Manager will form a key part of the team responsible for the activities of the office.


KEY PERFORMANCE AREAS:


• Coordinate and develop Nelson Mandela University’s IP-related project pipeline
• Manage all aspects of the process for securing statutory protection for specific technologies
• Manage the Seed Fund Project Portfolio and required submissions
• Undertake market and industry analysis of IP to identify potential commercialization partners
• Prepare proposals and secure funding for IP development
• Manage NIPMO-required submissions
• Support the Director with the commercialisation of Nelson Mandela University’s IP Portfolio
• Manage receipt of royalties or other consideration and disbursement to the University and inventors.
• Design, implement and manage part or all of the office’s innovation related initiatives and programmes


CORE COMPETENCIES


• Experience with South Africa’s policy landscape relating to: research and innovation systems; science and technology; and IP rights protection.
• Working knowledge of national and international research funding and commercialisation funding mechanisms.
• The ability to translate research ideas into funding proposals.
• A practical knowledge and understanding of research project budgeting, planning and implementation.
• The ability to manage and analyze innovative research projects to determine commercialisation strategies.
• Excellent computer skills - particularly in MSWord and MSExcel.
• Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
• Decisiveness and lateral thinking ability.
• Ability to liaise with individuals at all levels of seniority.
• Ability to build and maintain relationships with key internal and external stakeholders.
• Ability to actively promote a culture of innovation within the institution through a structured plan.
• Trustworthy and able to work without daily supervision; excellent team work ethic; values honesty, integrity and transparency.


REQUIREMENTS


• M+4 in a technology-based scientific field or engineering.
• A relevant master’s degree and/or a commercial qualification recommended
• A minimum of five years’ relevant experience - project management and commercialisation experience.
• Experience in a higher education, government or funding agency environment
• Knowledge of the functions and role of a university technology transfer office is essential.
• Valid driver’s license
