CORE PURPOSE OF JOB

The core purpose of this academic post is to contribute to the academic project in the Faculty of Law through the facilitation of learning and teaching (primarily in the Department of Public Law), to do research, contribute to the academic and community engagement and to be involved in the core functions of the Department and the Faculty.

KEY PERFORMANCE AREAS

  • Facilitate effective learning and teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, specifically in Public Law modules, such as Public International Law, Legal Interpretation, Constitutional Law, Human Rights Law, Environmental Law, African Regional Law and Local Government Law;
  • Assume responsibility for programme development, programme coordination, development of course materials, as well as the facilitation of lectures, tutorials and assessment of modules in Public Law;
  • Supervision of undergraduate and postgraduate students, both LLM and LLD;
  • Perform independent research and publish in peer reviewed journals (national and international);
  • Perform administrative duties and other functions as assigned by the Department or Faculty.

CORE COMPETENCIES

 
  • Expert knowledge in the theory and application of Public Law, specifically in Public International Law, Legal Interpretation, Constitutional Law, Human Rights Law, Environmental Law, African Regional Law and/or Local Government Law;
  • Experience in facilitating learning and teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate levels;
  • Ability to contribute to the creation of knowledge through research, conference proceedings and publications;
  • Strong communication, administrative and interpersonal skills;
  • Ability to supervise undergraduate and postgraduate candidates, both LLM and LLD;
  • Involvement in relevant engagement activities or other scholarly outputs.
 

REQUIREMENTS

 
  • An LLD in a sub-discipline in Public Law;
  • At least 10 years’ experience in a teaching, learning, supervision and research environment;
  • Demonstrated ability to produce research outputs, including accepted outputs in accredited journals (ideally at least 15 accredited outputs for professor position (journal articles, books, chapters in books, conference proceedings));
  • Demonstrated national and international recognition for learning and teaching, as well as research;
  • Demonstrated successful supervision experience at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, both LLM and LLD;
  • Demonstrated experience in Faculty/University leadership and/or management.
