Purpose of the role

Applies professional mechanical engineering principles to manage the implementation of major engineering and services projects through interpretation and alignment of plans to the project scope; controlling of functional and project budgets; participation in the tender adjudication processes, monitoring project delivery against performance, cost, timing and quality standards and other related procedures and controls, addressing project bottlenecks through the development implementation of contingency plans or consultation and the provision of guidance and advice and applying dispute procedures to address and resolve contractual conflicts.

Roles and Responsibilities

  1. 1.      INTERPRETING AND ALIGNING PROJECT DELIVERY PROGRAMME
  • Attending departmental meetings and participating in discussions with engineering management to gain an understanding of the scoping of a range of complex mechanical and service related project requirements i.e. major projects associated with new plant/ equipment installations, modifications, etc.
  • Engaging on and facilitating the project design process with the relevant section leadership and providing guidance and advice and overseeing the necessary confirmations/ approval are obtained.
  • Preparing project schedules, Bills of Quantities and other relevant documents and providing the information on scope of work, standards and specifications for inclusion into Tender documents.
  • Participating in the Tender adjudication process and providing engineering expertise and evaluating conformance in terms of local empowerment and transformation during the assessment of submissions from Contractors to support decisions with regards to the appointment.
  1. 2.      SUPERVISION AND CONTROL
  • Overseeing the execution of the key responsibilities relating to the Fabrication, Mechanical and Planning Office functional areas and delegating responsibilities, prioritizing specific requirements and monitoring timelines relating to the completion of specific activities.
  • Monitors conduct and performance and implements corrective measures to align behaviours and activities.
  • Participating in the recruitment and selection processes and identifying training needs and proposing specific training interventions to improve skills and capabilities.
  • Training, coaching and mentoring subordinates on the interpretation, application and execution of mechanical engineering activities relating to projects and interventions.
  • Applying the disciplinary procedures to verbally counsel employees in breach of specific disciplinary codes and initiating disciplinary processes to address serious deviations associated with misconduct or performance.
  • Monitoring time and attendance and addressing occurrences of repeated deviations from rules and procedures with the relevant employee with a view to creating awareness on the company procedure and correcting the behaviour e.g. late coming, absence without leave, etc.
  • Attending to requests for leave and confirming the availability of resources prior to submitting to the Engineering Manager for approval
  1. 3.      BUDGET AND EXPENDITURE CONTROL
  • Controlling capital expenditure and project budgets and monitoring cash-flows against committed expenditure.
  • Verifying payment certificates and preparing payment schedules and, attending to and resolving contractual payment claims
  • Tracking and reconciling project payments throughout the project life cycle and conducting investigations and resolving variances against budgetary allocations.
  • Preparing motivations to support and seek approval of deviations resulting from unforeseen occurrences.
  1. 4.      PROJECT IMPLEMENTATION
  • Conducting project briefings to detail and explain critical project requirements in terms of standards, key project milestones and timeframes.
  • Conducting site inspections to evaluate performance and adherence to technical engineering specifications and standards and compliance with safety and quality procedures.
  • Interrogating the cause of bottlenecks impacting the execution and providing guidance, advice, opinions and technical solutions to unblock delays or resolve complex installation and configuration issues.
  • Scheduling and chairing project meetings to discuss contractor performance, status of projects, critical timeframes, project costs, etc. and resolving or obtaining agreement or commitment on interventions to enable alignment of the execution to achieve deliverables.
  • Participating in the conducting of tests or trials to evaluate and resolve discrepancies in the installations or configurations and ensure seamless alignment and integration of new installations with existing and associated mechanical systems.
  • Facilitating the process of amendments to designs to ensure modifications or changes are completed.
  • Conducting post project commissioning evaluations to assess performance and the need for fine tuning or reconfiguration of settings or modifications.
  • Collating, verifying and consolidating project design documentation, operations and maintenance manuals and standard operating procedures and proceeding to confirm the correctness with the project owners.
  1. 5.      CONTRACTUAL DISPUTES AND CONFLICT RESOLUTION
  • Developing an understanding of the scope and area of conflict and, needs of the conflicting parties.
  • Facilitating discussions and using conflict resolution techniques to reach common understanding on the process.
  • Preparing the relevant documentation for presentation during mediation processes and articulating arguments from a professional perspective to defend actions and decisions.
  1. 6.      ADMINISTRATION AND MANAGEMENT REPORTING
  • Preparing consolidated project and functional performance reports incorporating financial and technical engineering information for presentation at meetings.
  • Preparing responses to queries referring to engineering project reports and contracts.
  • Completing purchase requisitions for approval by the Engineering Manager for mechanical engineering and service related projects and specific requirements relating to the functional areas.
  • Updating information/ data on project tracking systems and other related information system platforms.
  • Merging datasets to create graphical representations to depict trends in relation to performance, costs and timelines in relation to projects.
  • Maintaining records of project contractual documentation and minutes of meetings and resolutions.

Qualifications and Experience

  • B Tech. or B Sc. degree in Mechanical Engineering
  • 3 years’ mechanical engineering experience with exposure to a project management in a heavy industrial environment
  • Knowledge of engineering s
  • Application knowledge of the SAP system particularly with the modules relating to the engineering administrative and transactional process
  • Application knowledge of engineering and project management software
  • Valid Code B Driving License
