Purpose of the role
|
Provides a specialised draughting service using the relevant computer aided program or manual draughting principles and procedures to create technical drawings of parts, sub systems and complete assemblies or systems illustrated in two or three dimensional form and different views with detailed indication of technical specifications represented through different line styles, symbols, unit of measurements and notation systems and preparing the Bills of Materials (BoM) for a range of civil, electrical and mechanical engineering works and projects and participates in site consultations and technical meetings.

Roles and Responsibilities
|
- 1. ALIGNING DRAUGHTING WORKPLANS AND SCHEDULING ACTIVITIES TO SUPPORT DEPARTMENTAL REQUIREMENTS
- Attending departmental meetings and participating in discussions with engineering management on the draughting requirements for a range of engineering related requirements i.e. major projects, new installations, modifications, etc.
- Preparing plans to give coverage to the requirements and timelines of activities and, contributing to the budgetary estimation/ forecast of the expenses for the drawing office in relation to consumables and equipment.
- Referring to draughting request forms to plan and schedule site surveys, inspections and consultations required to prepare, present and obtain approval of design detail, technical references and specifications
- Providing guidance and mentoring the Junior Draughtsperson on the draughting software application and processes associated with acquiring information, preparing sketches and, draughting and detailing the features of objects i.e. parts and assembly in different forms/ views to scale and standard.

- 2. DRAUGHTING OFFICE SYSTEMS, PROCEDURES AND CONTROLS
- Discussing the processes, practices and the technical applications with the immediate supervisor and recommending revision, alignment or introduction of procedures, systems and controls.
- Proceeding with implementing approved changes or new processes in terms of the draughting file referencing and recordkeeping systems, storage and access to archived records, change or revision procedures and document controls for revisions, comments and approvals.
- Implementing quality assurance standards for checking and verifying the accuracy and completeness of all drawings prior to circulation.
- Implementing maintenance plans for drawing office equipment to ensure scheduled inspections, calibrations or servicing is executed in accordance with the specifications.

- 3. COMPUTER AIDED DRAUGHTING (CAD) AND TECHNICAL SKETCHES AND DRAWINGS
- Referring to engineering sketches completed by Engineers and interpreting the technical information and instructions for various drawings (i.e. revisions, modifications or new drawings) of parts or, complete assembly or, plant systems and arrangements.
- Referring to historical engineering records to obtain information on the specifications of parts, sub systems and complete assemblies and, calculating dimensions or identifying with the geometric features i.e. form, shape, size, fit, etc.
- Consulting supplier manuals and available literature on complete mechanical assemblies or components and parts to obtain technical specifications.
- Referring to and identifying with the standards and regulations contained in the ‘Red Book or ‘Yellow Book’ for draughting and detailing of mechanical structural and machinery assembly or, parts/ sections or components of an assembly.
- Studying and analysing the data and information gathered from site consultation and references and studying sketches and specification schedules to extract and consolidate information/ specifications that is relevant and required for technical draughting.
- Inserting a broad range of technical data to set up the two dimensional or three dimensional drawing parameters on the CAD or Solid Edge system or, arranging drawing tools, instruments and material for manual draughting.
- Using various tools or, applying technical drawing techniques to draw to scale and illustrate objects in various views i.e. isometric or orthographic.
- Detailing geometric features using colour coding or varying line styles to show contours/ arcs or, using hidden and control lines to illustrate internal dimensions and symmetry.
- Applying draughting standards to insert symbols, units of measurements and notation systems on drawings.
- Presenting the completed drawings and discussing the technical representation and configurations with engineering management and proceeding with completing approved changes to the illustrated projections or specifications.
- Referencing the final drawing i.e. version/ date and description, special instructions, etc. and obtaining final authorisation from engineering management prior to printing copies for circulation.
- Manipulating data and performing calculations during the preparation of Bills of Materials (BOM) and other relevant schedules.

- 4. PROJECT CONSULTATION AND DRAUGHTING ACTIVITIES
- Studying or interacting on the project scope as it relates to draughting requirements and participating project meetings to obtain information, specifications and guidelines for preparing drawings and specification schedules.
- Undertaking site measurements and proceeding with preparing or transferring engineering sketches or specifications to working drawings.
- Engaging with the Project Team on the working drawings and proceeding with the preparation of detailed drawings to accurately depict dimensions and arrangements of civil, electrical or mechanical installations, fittings and fixtures.
- Preparing Bills of Materials (BOM) and checking and verifying final project drawings and schedules comply with standards and design codes prior to circulating for approval.

- 5. ON SITE ADVISORY AND TECHNICAL ENGAGEMENTS
- Participating with engineering management, engineers and technical specialists and applying technical understanding to undertake calculations during the determination of mill and pinion settings and other key and critical specifications in relation to the workings of plant and machinery.
- Making reference to technical data and drawings and providing views and opinions during the set-up or, construction and assembly or, installation or alignment process.
- Responding to technical requests in relation to the assembly, configuration/ operating specification of parts or the relationship/ sequence of different parts within an assembly and, searching, obtaining and making available data and information.
- Engaging with Contractors and providing technical guidelines and information to enable interpretation of specifications and technical details included in drawings and schedules.

- 6. DRAUGHTING OFFICE ADMINISTRATION
- Indexing and referencing drawings in accordance with the standards and applying the approved file plan procedure to store hardcopy versions.
- Applying document management system procedure to name files, insert location details and proceeding with saving and storing files on the computer system into the relevant folders.
- Controlling the issuing/ return of reference materials from the Drawing Office Technical Library and referencing/ storing new materials.
- Conducting searches on the internet or consulting technical reference materials to obtain and update technical data to maintain the technical library information material.
- Storing drawing tools/ instruments safely and securely in a designated location in accordance with procedure.
- Initiating and following up on service requests logged for the maintenance and updating of the CAD Drawing Office Software program and/ or instruments and tools (i.e. plan printer; theodolite, dumper levels, etc.).
- Updating and/ or checking the information recorded in the drawing office register is completed in accordance with standard practice guidelines.
- Completing forms i.e. requisition/ service orders, etc. and submitting for further processing and following on the approval to enable purchases/ services requirements to be scheduled.
- Checking and verifying transactional information reflected on invoices for service rendered to the Drawing Office and, approving and submitting for authorization and payment.
- Monitoring the Drawing Office spend against budget and providing reasons for any variations from the allocated provisions.
- Administering the stocks of consumables and stationery and proceeding with the replenishing depleted stocks or determining/ testing and approving the purchase of alternative consumables/ materials to overcome supply shortage/ non availability.

Qualifications and Experience
|
- A three year Tertiary qualification i.e. N Dip or equivalent post matriculation three year engineering draughting qualification with an accredited institute of higher learning.
- 5 to 7 years’ experience in the technical draughting field with extensive project experience in a heavy industrial environment
- Registration with ECSA as a Pr. Technician will be advantageous
- Proficient in AutoCAD and other relevant computer draughting software.
- Knowledge of the SAP system particularly with the modules relating to the engineering administrative and transactional process
- Valid Code B Driving License
