SENIOR LEGAL ADVISOR
LEGAL
The role reports to and supports the Head of Legal: Africa in the implementation, maintenance, and management of the Group’s legal and regulatory framework across the various jurisdictions in which the Group operates.
The incumbent will be responsible for executing a range of legal and compliance-related functions within the national legal framework, aimed at safeguarding the organisation’s legal and reputational interests, mitigating business risk, and ensuring compliance with all applicable laws, regulations, and internal policies governing the organisation’s operations.
This role entails oversight and execution of key legal functions, including but not limited to:
Providing legal advice and strategic guidance to internal stakeholders;
Drafting, reviewing, and negotiating legal agreements and other commercial instruments;
Managing legal compliance and regulatory obligations;
Supporting corporate governance processes and fulfilling related legal administrative duties.
The incumbent will play a critical role in promoting a culture of ethical business conduct and sound legal risk management across the organisation.
Job Purpose
Provide structured and methodical management of the organisation’s legal workstreams, including the provision of legal support and advisory services to Business Units. This includes contributing to the ongoing development, implementation, and execution of the Legal Framework and Legal Strategy, in alignment with the organisation’s broader business objectives.
The incumbent will support effective legal integration across functions and jurisdictions, fostering cross-functional collaboration and ensuring that legal considerations are embedded in key business decisions and operations. This will be carried out in close coordination with and under the strategic direction of, the Head of Legal: Africa.
Key Accountabilities and Outputs
Legal
Facilitate the implementation of the Company’s legal strategy, policies, and frameworks to ensure legal compliance and support long-term organisational sustainability. Act as a legal subject matter expert, providing guidance on actual and potential legal risks, and support to the Head of Legal.
Lead and/or support contract negotiations, including the drafting and review of bespoke commercial agreements, non-disclosure agreements (NDAs), terms and conditions, legal notices, and related documents. Ensure legal robustness and compliance with applicable legislative and regulatory frameworks. Develop and maintain standard templates and contracting processes.
Provide legal advice and support to other business units and functions in relation to their operational and strategic legal requirements.
Manage engagements with the Company’s panel of external legal service providers, including the oversight of litigation and dispute resolution processes, with a focus on risk mitigation and cost-effectiveness.
Support the design and implementation of legal risk mitigation measures; maintain the Company’s contract repository and legal template database; and perform general legal administrative functions in support of the legal team.
Corporate Affairs
Perform general corporate legal and company secretarial work, including support for governance structures such as the Executive Management Committee and the Board of Directors. Responsibilities include preparing minutes, maintaining company registrations, supporting the establishment of legal entities, and managing corporate structure records.
Provide legal support in relation to ethics, compliance, and corporate governance matters, ensuring adherence to internal policies and external regulatory obligations.
Transformation and BBBEE
Champion a values-based, inclusive culture within the legal function and across the business. Promote transformation objectives and support the Company’s socio-economic development initiatives, including BBBEE compliance.
Monitor and track BBBEE progress, working closely with business units and BBBEE pillar owners to consolidate reporting and drive alignment with strategic transformation goals.
Legal Support
Conduct legal research and analysis of relevant statutes, regulations, and case law to support decision-making and ensure legal compliance.
Support the implementation of key legal and transformation projects, ensuring delivery within scope, timelines, and budget, in coordination with cross-functional teams.
Provide administrative and advisory support in relation to the protection, enforcement, and management of the Company’s intellectual property (IP), trademarks, and proprietary information, in consultation with the Company’s trademark attorneys and the Head of Legal: Africa.
General
Perform ad hoc legal and corporate tasks as may be reasonably required in alignment with business needs.
Remain up to date with changes in applicable legislation, case law, and regulatory developments impacting the Company’s operations within sub-Saharan jurisdictions.
Collaborate with stakeholders to provide recommendations on acceptable risk levels and embed legal considerations into broader business decision-making.
Maintain familiarity with business operations, relevant policies, procedures, and strategic priorities.
Consistently deliver work in accordance with expected performance and professional standards.
While this job description outlines the primary duties and responsibilities of the role, the Company may require employees to assist with other tasks outside the immediate scope of the role, as operationally necessary.
Strong corporate and commercial law expertise, with experience in drafting, negotiating, and implementing a wide range of agreements and legal standards.
Ability to work independently and communicate complex legal concepts clearly, both orally and in writing, across all levels of the organisation.
Willing to travel, as required.
Qualifications and Experience
Tertiary qualification – B. Com Law/LLB , Post Grad will be an advantage
5+ years’ experience within a legal, compliance management and advisory role within a similar environment. (In House Exposure is preferred)
Proficient in MS Office.
Driver’s licence.
