COREPURPOSEOFJOB
|
The Department of Human Movement Science is a well-established academic department housed in a state-of-the-art building. It has a recognized Biokinetics and Sport Science Unit (BSSU) and is an integral part of the Madibaz High Performance Complex. The Department is looking for a Laboratory technician in the field of Human Movement Sciences (Sport Science and/or Biokinetics) with at least two years’ practical laboratory testing experience pertinent to laboratory-based practical’s and research support. The incumbent will be expected to manage the five laboratories in the department as well as be responsible for the health and safety of the overall facility and therefore a First aid level II or III certificate is essential.

KEYPERFORMANCE AREAS
|
- Ensure that the HMS Department (including the 5 laboratories, the High-Performance Complex (HPC and the BSSU) is compliant with all aspects related to health and safety.
- Ensure that all exercise and laboratory equipment within the facility are properly maintained and serviceable.
- Provide financial administration functions in relation to the ordering of laboratory equipment and all laboratory-related consumables and material.
- Be the primary First Aider for both the HMS Department, BSSU and HPC and have the necessary training and certification to deal with emergencies.
- Prepping of laboratories before practical classes and research/clinical/sport science testing.
- Assist with and prepare for research and clinical and high-performance testing services offered.
- Assist with and present selected laboratory practical classes for under- and post-graduate modules.
- Assist with bookings related to the use of laboratories for services provided by the BSSU and HPC.
- Provide support services and assistance for the hosting of training camps linked to the BSSU and HPC services offered.
- Training of post-graduate students and staff on the use of various lab-based equipment.
- General support to researchers related to preparation, calibration and maintenance of equipment to assist in the increase in research quality and productivity.
- Developing of Standard operating procedures, including but not limited to laboratory management, health and safety and equipment maintenance.

REQUIREMENTS
|
To be considered for appointment to this post, candidates must have the following:
Qualification
- Be in possession of a master’s degree in human Movement Science (or equivalent).
- Have a minimum of a current First Aid Level II.
Experience
- Have a minimum two (2) years’ relevant practical laboratory experience managing and maintaining a research laboratory with clinical, sport and exercise equipment.
- Have a minimum two (2) years’ experience in the utilization of sport, exercise and clinical specialized laboratory equipment and software.
- Have a minimum two (2) years’ experience in the management of datasets and data analytics programs
Skills:
Technical skills
- Provide evidence of experience in the utilization of sport, exercise and clinical specialized laboratory equipment and software (e.g. MATLAB, Python, Cortex/Cosmed, Monark)
- Provide evidence of experience in the management of datasets and data analytics programs.
Administrative and interpersonal skills
- Have excellent and proven interpersonal and communication skills with students, staff, and the public
- Have proficient computer skills in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Power-Point, Teams, Outlook).
- Be prepared to work early and late shifts as required by BSSU, and when required, to work on Saturdays when training camps or testing sessions are held
